Understanding the Property

The property is a four-bedroom bungalow located near Narberth in Pembrokeshire. Built between 1920 and 1939, the home was heated by an oil boiler and already benefited from cavity wall and loft insulation. The homeowner was facing the cost of replacing an ageing oil tank and wanted to explore whether an air source heat pump could provide a more cost-effective and future-ready heating solution.

To determine whether a heat pump would be suitable, our team carried out a full property survey, assessing the insulation levels, heating requirements, existing pipework and radiator system. The complete system included:

  • Partial central heating upgrades

This combination was chosen to provide reliable space heating and hot water while maximising the efficiency of the heat pump.

Radiator Upgrades

An important part of many heat pump installations involves ensuring the property’s radiators are correctly sized to work efficiently with lower flow temperatures.

As part of this project, Smart Energy Homes upgraded four radiators using Stelrad Halcyon models:

  • Bathroom: Stelrad Halcyon 600×600 K2
  • Bedroom 1: Stelrad Halcyon 600×600 K1
  • Bedroom 3: Stelrad Halcyon 600×700 K1
  • Office: Stelrad Halcyon 600×700 K1

These upgrades help the new heating system distribute warmth effectively throughout the property whilst maintaining comfort levels for the homeowner.

Installation Process

The installation was completed over four days by our experienced heating team.

During the project, we:

Removed and disconnected the existing heating equipment where required.
Installed the Grant Aerona 290 outdoor unit.
Fitted the new hot water cylinder.
Upgraded key radiators.
Installed and commissioned the Grant smart controls.
Tested and optimised the heating system for maximum efficiency.
