Air Source Heat Pump Installation in Tisbury, Salisbury

Smart Energy Homes recently completed an air source heat pump installation at a semi-detached three-bedroom property in Tisbury, Salisbury, helping the homeowner move away from an ageing oil heating system and towards a more efficient, renewable heating solution.

The homeowner had been exploring alternatives to oil heating due to rising energy costs and a desire to reduce their reliance on fossil fuels. Their existing oil boiler had been installed in 2014 and, while still operational, they were keen to take advantage of available renewable heating grants and future-proof their home against fluctuating fuel prices.

Having already researched the technology and obtained previous quotations, the homeowner was ready to proceed if the survey and proposed system met their expectations. Following a detailed assessment of the property, Smart Energy Homes designed and installed a Grant Aerona 290 4kW Air Source Heat Pump system, alongside a new hot water cylinder, smart controls and selected heating system upgrades.

Understanding the Property

The property is a three-bedroom semi-detached home located in Tisbury, near Salisbury. Built between 1940 and 1969, the property benefits from cavity wall construction and has already undergone insulation improvements, making it well-suited to low-carbon heating technology.

The home was previously heated by an oil-fired system, with annual fuel usage consisting of two 500-litre oil fills. The homeowner’s primary motivation for switching was reducing heating costs while exploring eligibility for government grant funding towards the installation.

Property Overview

  • Location: Tisbury, Salisbury
  • Property Type: Three-Bedroom Semi-Detached House
  • Construction Period: 1940-1969
  • Wall Type: Cavity Wall
  • Previous Heating System: Oil Boiler
  • Age of Existing System: Installed in 2014
  • Insulation Status: Insulated
  • Customer Goal: Reduce energy bills and move away from oil
Energy Efficient Heat Pump
The Recommended Solution

After assessing the property’s heating demand, insulation levels and existing heating infrastructure, Smart Energy Homes recommended a Grant Aerona 290 4kW Air Source Heat Pump.

System Installed

  • Air Source Heat Pump: Grant Aerona 290 4kW
  • Hot Water Cylinder: Joule Quick Recovery Single Coil Slim 200L Cyclone
  • Heating Controls: Grant Aerona 290 Smart Controller
  • Central Heating Upgrade: Partial
  • Installation Duration: 2 Days
  • Heat Pump Location: Rear of the Property
  • Cylinder Location: First Floor Store Room at Rear of Property

The external heat pump unit was positioned at the rear of the property, while the new unvented cylinder was installed within a first-floor store area, creating an efficient and practical system layout.

Installation Process

The installation was completed over two days by our experienced renewable heating engineers.

The project included:

Heat pump installation
Hot water cylinder installation
Heating system upgrades
Smart control installation
System commissioning
Performance testing and optimisation

Once installation was complete, the system was thoroughly tested and commissioned to ensure it was operating efficiently before being handed over to the homeowner.

Heating System Upgrades

To maximise the efficiency and performance of the new air source heat pump, a partial upgrade to the existing heating system was undertaken.

As the property’s pipework and radiators had been installed relatively recently during the 2014 heating system upgrade, much of the existing infrastructure was suitable for reuse. Any required alterations were carefully designed to ensure the new heat pump could operate at optimal efficiency while providing consistent comfort throughout the home.

Correctly sized radiators and properly balanced heating circuits play a vital role in helping air source heat pumps deliver excellent performance and lower running costs.

Why Replace an Oil Heating System?

The homeowner’s main objective was to move away from oil and reduce their household energy costs.

Like many rural homes in Wiltshire, the property relied on oil deliveries for heating and hot water. While oil systems have traditionally been a popular choice in off-grid locations, increasing fuel costs and growing interest in renewable technologies are encouraging more homeowners to investigate alternative heating solutions.

Benefits of upgrading from oil to an air source heat pump can include:

  • Lower carbon emissions
  • Improved energy efficiency
  • Reduced reliance on oil deliveries
  • More stable heating costs
  • Year-round heating and hot water
  • Future-ready renewable technology
  • Potential long-term savings

The homeowner was also interested in the government’s Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant, helping to offset the upfront investment associated with installing renewable heating technology.

A Homeowner Ready for Change

One of the key features of this project was the homeowner’s proactive approach to improving their home’s energy efficiency.

Having already gathered previous quotations and researched available grant funding, they were well-informed about the benefits and investment involved in switching to an air source heat pump. Their primary focus was finding the right solution to lower energy bills while ensuring long-term reliability and comfort.

With both decision-makers actively involved throughout the process, the project progressed smoothly from survey through to installation.
