Air Source Heat Pump Installation in Taunton, Somerset

Smart Energy Homes recently completed an air source heat pump installation at a barn conversion near Taunton, Somerset, helping the homeowner transition from LPG heating to a more efficient renewable energy solution.

The customer was looking for a heating system that would improve reliability, reduce long-term running costs and future-proof the property. Although the existing LPG boiler was still operational, it was becoming increasingly expensive to run, prompting the homeowner to explore alternative heating technologies.

Following a detailed on-site survey, our team recommended and installed a Grant Aerona 290 15.5kW Air Source Heat Pump designed to work efficiently with the property’s existing underfloor heating system.

Understanding the Property

The property is a two-bedroom semi-detached barn conversion located near Taunton in Somerset. Renovated in 2004, the home benefits from modern insulation standards and an underfloor heating system throughout much of the property.

At the time of our survey, the home was heated by an LPG boiler that was approximately 11 years old. While the boiler remained functional, the homeowner wanted to move away from LPG due to rising running costs and concerns about long-term affordability.

The Recommended Solution

Following a full survey and heat loss assessment, Smart Energy Homes recommended a Grant Aerona 290 15.5kW Air Source Heat Pump.

The system was selected to meet the heating demands of the property while integrating seamlessly with the existing underfloor heating setup.

System Installed

  • Air Source Heat Pump: Grant Aerona 290 15.5kW
  • Hot Water Cylinder: Grant Quick Recovery 2 Single Coil 180L Cylinder
  • Heating Controls: Grant Aerona 290 Smart Controller
  • Central Heating Upgrade: Not Required
  • Installation Duration: 3 Days

The heat pump was positioned close to the existing cylinder location to minimise disruption and optimise installation efficiency, making use of an existing concrete base area.

The hot water cylinder was installed within the loft space above the WC area, adjacent to the primary bedroom.

Installation Process

The Smart Energy Homes team completed the installation over three days.

The project included:

Installation of the Grant Aerona 290 heat pump
Installation of the 180L hot water cylinder
Smart control setup
System testing and commissioning
Customer handover

Following installation, the system was fully commissioned and optimised to ensure efficient operation and reliable performance.

Why an Air Source Heat Pump?

The homeowner’s priority was finding a heating solution that could deliver reliable performance while reducing exposure to fluctuating LPG prices.

Air source heat pumps are particularly well suited to properties with underfloor heating because they operate efficiently at lower flow temperatures.

Benefits of upgrading from LPG to a heat pump can include:

Improved energy efficiency
Reduced carbon emissions
Lower reliance on delivered fuel
Consistent home comfort
Renewable heating technology
Greater long-term energy security

Energy Efficient Heat Pump
Future-Proofing the Property

For this homeowner, the decision to install an air source heat pump was about more than reducing heating costs. The project formed part of a longer-term strategy to future-proof the property, improve reliability and embrace renewable energy technology. By moving away from LPG heating, the homeowner now benefits from a modern renewable heating system designed to provide efficient comfort for many years to come.
