Air Source Heat Pump Installation in Ashley Heath, Ringwood

Smart Energy Homes recently completed an air source heat pump installation at a three-bedroom bungalow in Ashley Heath, Ringwood. The project formed part of a wider property renovation and extension, with the homeowner looking to future-proof the property while improving comfort and heating efficiency.

With an existing gas boiler that was more than 10 years old, the homeowner decided it was the ideal time to explore renewable heating options. As building work was already underway, the project presented an excellent opportunity to upgrade the home’s heating system and prepare it for the future.

Following a detailed survey and system design, our team installed a Grant Aerona 290 9kW Air Source Heat Pump alongside a new hot water cylinder and smart heating controls.

Understanding the Property

The property is a three-bedroom bungalow located in Ashley Heath, near Ringwood. Built between 1940 and 1969, the home benefits from cavity wall construction and had undergone previous heating improvements, including radiator replacements within the last decade.

At the time of our survey, the homeowner was undertaking substantial renovation works, including a new extension incorporating additional living space. With foundations already in place, they wanted to ensure the property’s heating system was suitable for both the existing home and future expansion.

Property Overview

  • Location: Ashley Heath, Ringwood
  • Property Type: Three-Bedroom Bungalow
  • Construction Period: 1940-1969
  • Wall Type: Cavity Wall Construction
  • Previous Heating System: Mains Gas Boiler
  • Boiler Age: Over 10 Years Old
  • Radiators: Replaced Within The Last 9 Years
  • Property Improvements: Ongoing Extension & Renovation
  • Customer Goal: Improve comfort and future-proof the home
The Recommended Solution

After assessing the property’s heating requirements and future plans, Smart Energy Homes recommended a Grant Aerona 290 9kW Air Source Heat Pump.

The system was selected to provide efficient heating and hot water while supporting the property’s renovation project and long-term energy goals.

System Installed

  • Air Source Heat Pump: Grant Aerona 290 9kW
  • Hot Water Cylinder: Joule Cyclone High Gain Indirect 200L Cylinder
  • Heating Controls: Grant Aerona 290 Smart Controller
  • Central Heating Upgrade: Not Required
  • Installation Duration: 3 Days

The heat pump was installed externally between the new extension and bedroom area, while the hot water cylinder was installed within the airing cupboard.

Installation Process

The project was completed over three days by our experienced heating engineers.

The installation included:

Installation of the Grant Aerona 290 heat pump
Installation of the 200L Joule hot water cylinder
Smart controller installation
System testing and commissioning
Customer handover and guidance

Once complete, the system was carefully commissioned and optimised to ensure reliable operation and maximum efficiency.

Why No Radiator Upgrades Were Needed

Unlike many heat pump projects, this installation did not require radiator replacements.

The homeowner had already upgraded their radiators within the previous nine years, meaning the existing system was suitable for integration with the new heat pump design. This helped streamline the installation process while reducing overall disruption.

Replacing Gas Heating as Part of a Wider Retrofit

Many homeowners choose to install air source heat pumps when their boiler reaches the end of its lifespan. In this case, the project formed part of a broader renovation strategy aimed at improving the property’s comfort, efficiency and long-term sustainability.

Benefits of switching from gas heating can include:

  • Improved energy efficiency
  • Lower carbon emissions
  • Renewable heating technology
  • Future-ready home improvements
  • Reduced reliance on fossil fuels
  • Consistent home comfort

For homeowners already carrying out renovation works, upgrading the heating system at the same time can be an effective way to prepare the property for future energy requirements.
