Air Source Heat Pump Installation in Pencoed, Bridgend

Smart Energy Homes recently completed an air source heat pump installation at a rural property in Pencoed, Bridgend, helping the homeowner transition away from an ageing oil heating system and towards a more efficient, renewable heating solution.

The customer approached us after experiencing high energy bills and concerns about the reliability of their existing oil boiler. Looking for a long-term solution that would improve efficiency and reduce reliance on fossil fuels, they wanted to explore whether an air source heat pump would be suitable for their property.

Following a detailed survey, our team designed and installed a Grant Aerona 290 9kW Air Source Heat Pump alongside a new hot water cylinder, smart controls and a full central heating upgrade. The homeowner also took advantage of funding through the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, helping to offset the cost of the installation.

Understanding the Property

The property is a rural home located near Pencoed in Bridgend and was previously heated by an oil boiler system. The homeowner was experiencing high energy costs and was concerned about the age and future reliability of the existing heating system.

During our survey, we assessed the property’s heating requirements, existing pipework, radiator sizes and hot water demand to determine the most suitable heating solution.

Property Overview

  • Location: Pencoed, Bridgend
  • Property Type: Rural Residential Property
  • Previous Heating System: Oil Boiler
  • Reason for Upgrade: Ageing heating system and high energy bills
  • Customer Goal: Reduce running costs and improve efficiency
  • Funding Used: Boiler Upgrade Scheme

The Recommended Solution

Following our assessment, Smart Energy Homes recommended a complete renewable heating upgrade designed to improve comfort, efficiency and long-term performance.

System Installed

  • Air Source Heat Pump: Grant Aerona 290 9kW
  • Hot Water Cylinder: Grant Quick Recovery 2 Single Coil 300L
  • Heating Controls: Grant Aerona 290 Smart Controller
  • Central Heating Upgrade: Yes
  • Installation Duration: 6 Days

The outdoor heat pump unit was installed at the rear of the property’s extension, while the new cylinder was fitted within the property’s airing cupboard.

To ensure maximum heat pump efficiency, a full radiator upgrade was completed as part of the installation.

A total of 13 new radiators were installed throughout the property, including upgrades in the kitchen, study, living room, bedrooms, bathrooms, dining area and hallway.

Heat pumps operate most efficiently alongside correctly sized radiators, making this an important element of the overall system design. By upgrading the existing heat emitters, we were able to ensure the property would benefit from consistent comfort and efficient heating performance throughout the home.

Taking Advantage of the Boiler Upgrade Scheme

One of the key benefits of this project was the homeowner’s eligibility for support through the Boiler Upgrade Scheme.

This government-backed initiative helps homeowners transition from fossil fuel heating systems to low-carbon alternatives such as air source heat pumps.

By taking advantage of the Boiler Upgrade Scheme contribution, the customer was able to significantly reduce the upfront investment required for their new renewable heating system.

Homeowners that heat their home with gas are eligible for a £7,500 contribution, and those who heat their home with LPG or Oil get £9,000 via the Boiler Upgrade Scheme.

Installation Process

The project was completed over six days by our experienced heating engineers.

The installation included:

Removal and preparation of the existing heating system
Installation of the Grant Aerona 290 heat pump
Installation of the new 300L hot water cylinder
Full radiator replacement programme
Smart controller installation
Testing, commissioning and optimisation

Once complete, the system was thoroughly tested and commissioned to ensure it was operating efficiently and delivering optimal performance.
