Air Source Heat Pump Replacement in Peterston-super-Ely, Cardiff

Smart Energy Homes recently completed an air source heat pump replacement at a property in Peterston-super-Ely, Cardiff, helping the homeowner restore reliable heating and hot water after their existing renewable heating system stopped working effectively.

Unlike many of our heat pump installations, this project did not involve replacing an oil or gas boiler. The property already had an air source heat pump installed, but the existing system had become unreliable and was no longer delivering the level of comfort and performance the homeowner expected.

Looking for a solution as quickly as possible, the homeowner contacted Smart Energy Homes to assess the property and recommend a suitable replacement system.

Understanding the Property

The homeowner was already familiar with the benefits of renewable heating and was keen to continue using an air source heat pump. However, their existing system had developed issues that were affecting heating performance and overall comfort within the property.

Because the current system was no longer operating effectively, the customer wanted a replacement that could provide reliable heating, improved control and greater peace of mind moving forward.

Property Overview:
Location: Peterston-super-Ely, Cardiff
Project Type: Air Source Heat Pump Replacement
Previous Heating System: Existing Air Source Heat Pump
Reason for Upgrade: Existing system was not working correctly
Customer Priority: Improved home comfort
Installation Duration: 2 Days

  • Heating Controls: Cosy Hub & Cosy Pods

  • Cylinder Location: Outbuilding

This combination provides an efficient heating and hot water solution while allowing the homeowner to manage their system through intelligent controls.

Installation Process

The project was completed over two days by our experienced installation team.

Works included:

Removal and replacement of the existing heat pump system
Installation of the new Octopus Cosy 9 unit
Installation of the Joule Cyclone hot water cylinder
Integration of Cosy Hub and Cosy Pod controls
Partial heating system upgrades
Testing and commissioning

Following installation, the system was fully commissioned and optimised to deliver efficient performance and reliable heating throughout the property.

Why Replace an Existing Heat Pump?

Although air source heat pumps are designed to provide many years of reliable operation, there are occasions where replacement becomes the most practical option.

Common reasons include:

  • System reliability issues
  • Poor performance
  • Ageing equipment
  • Difficulty sourcing replacement parts
  • Desire for improved controls and efficiency
  • Improved household comfort

For this homeowner, restoring dependable heating and hot water was the primary objective, making replacement the most suitable long-term solution.

Boiler Upgrade Scheme Eligibility

Many homeowners installing a heat pump can benefit from support through the Boiler Upgrade Scheme. However, because this property already had a renewable heating system in place, the installation was not eligible for Boiler Upgrade Scheme funding.

Despite this, the homeowner chose to proceed with the project due to the importance of restoring heating performance and home comfort.
